by on Dec.15, 2010, under iPad Accessories, iPad Cases

The iPad is much more than just a portable tablet computer – there are times where you’ll want it to stay put, and propping it up can really add to its functionality. For those who want to use it at a desk, or relax while they read or watch movies, the iPad stand is a necessary accessory.

Cases That Double As Stands: The simplest iPad stands you can buy are multi-functional – they’re actually iPad folio cases that can be folded back to double as a stand. This is useful if you just need a stand every once in a while to watch a movie, or you want a cost effective option. A popular example of this kind of stand is the Acase Deluxe Leather Multi-View Case.

iPad Docks: Docks are designed to make charging more convenient, but they also double as a stand for the iPad.  Apple sells a standard dock or a dock that also includes a full-sized external keyboard for those who want to use their iPad more like a computer and monitor.

Multimedia Multi-Purpose Wood Stand:  A new trend when it comes to playing music is to download the sheet music digitally – much like eBooks. The iPad makes this even more attractive thanks to stands that have been developed to allow musicians to comfortably read those sheets without ever printing them out! The Multimedia Multi-Purpose Wood Stand is perfect for iPads and traditional sheet music.

iPad Microphone Stand: Following on from the point above, Apple have also come up with a microphone that includes a built in stand for the iPad – perfect for singers or even those who need notes when giving a presentation. You can even buy a foot pedal to turn the pages with without getting distracted from your performance!

Other Types of iPad Stand: The stands mentioned are all rather specialist products. If you just want something that’ll stand your iPad on the desk – to make reading, typing or watching videos easier – then there are plenty of products make for this specific purpose. Some of the most popular include the Griffin A-Frame Tabletop Stand for iPad:

Skins: iPad skins can come in either soft or hard materials, and basically fit themselves tightly around the shape of the iPad to protect it against minor bumps and scratches.

Sleeve: A sleeve is simply a fitted pouch for your iPad which is useful for keeping it protected against dirt etc.

Unfortunately, days just before the iPad launch, Apple removed all the gadget screen protectors from its physical and online stores. It was not clear why Apple would do so to its top selling accessories. A couple theories are swirling around. An article on iLounge suggests that maybe it’s a marketing ploy intended to make the iPad’s screen appear more durable than advertised.
